Life In Melbourne

Melbourne is home to one of the most diverse and harmonious communities in the world, representing over 140 cultures and ethnic groups. According to the 2016 census,  around 40% of Melbourne’s population was born overseas.

Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia, with a population of just over 5 million people. It is a global centre for art, music, theatre and sport, and has been ranked by the EIU as the second most liveable city in the world for seven years in a row due to its high standards of education, health care, entertainment and tourism.

During their time at Alphington Grammar School, we encourage our International Students to explore our vibrant city and the opportunities it holds. The majority of International Students over the age of 13 live with an assigned Homestay Family during their journey with Alphington Grammar School, whilst students under the age of 13 are required to live with their Parent/Guardian as approved by the Department of Home Affairs, who must hold the appropriate Guardian Visa.

Our International Student Coordinator works closely with our International Students, their Parent Liaisons, Parents/Guardians and Homestay families to ensure that the transition from the student’s own home country to Alphington Grammar and life in Melbourne runs smoothly.
