Cocurricular Activities

The Enrichment Program complements the broad, dynamic classroom curriculum, whilst also offering students the opportunity to immerse themselves in an array of character-building programs.

We encourage all students to explore the many activities on offer, in order to broaden their knowledge, learn a new skill, and get to know students from across different year levels.

Participation is encouraged, like-minded interest groups are discovered and our program provides opportunities to develop lifelong skills.

Primary Cocurricular

In the Primary School, we know that free and unstructured play is vital, but we also know that offering further opportunities to develop new skills, relationships and interests in an ‘out of class’ setting, provides huge benefits. The program offers choice, fun and the opportunity to extend current interests or develop new passions.

Primary Clubs and Activities

Bug Club

Our bushland gardens are home to many interesting bugs. Students study the  bugs found at our campus, Identify them, document their findings, learn how how they live and how to make an environment for them to thrive.  

 

Chess Club

Students discover the fun of strategy, problem-solving and friendly competition. We offer beginner, intermediate and advanced groups where everyone learns at their own pace. Supported by a professional coach students quickly develop a love of Chess. Students can further their passion for Chess by entering inter-school competitions.

 

Chill Zone

Students wind down after a busy week, read a book, have a chat with friends, play a game, solve a puzzle for just chill with our Primary teachers.

 

Homework Club 

Supervised assistance to complete homework for Years 2 to 6, one hour per week.  

 

Melody Masters

For those who love making music there is lots of musical fun and performance, Years 3 to 6.

 

Poco Chorale

Students from Years 3 to 6 who love singing can join this popular singing club. The Poco Chorale performs at Assemblies and festivals.

 

Primary Greek Choir

Practice Greek language through song. Multi age group learn songs from famous Greek composers, increasing confidence and fun. The Primary Greek Choir performs throughout the year. 

 

Writing Club

For students in Year 6, students contribute to a School community blog. Fostering student voice and showcasing creative writing a great club for budding authors.

 

Years 5 and 6 Band

Join with students who have a love of music. Jam with friends and develop performance skills. 

Secondary Cocurricular

Students in the Secondary School are offered activities spanning the areas of music and performing arts, dance, sport, games, debating, STEM and many more. 

All students in Years 7- 10 are expected to participate in a minimum of two activities per semester. A Certificate of Enrichment Excellence will be awarded to students who have participated in 5 or more Enrichment activities.

Creative

Art Club

For those who love to draw or design, students explore their ideas and projects or spend time finessing a piece already created in Art class. Students can submit their work to the enter the Visual Arts Cup and be exhibited in our annual Art Show. 

 

Cosplay Club

Performance art where students dress up as characters from a book, movie, game or popular culture and then play that character at a particular event. 

 

Costume Makeup

A 5-week course covering fun techniques, experimenting with several different looks and learn how to create fake scars. 

Music and Performance

Alphington Chorale

The Alphington Chorale is our premier Senior singing ensemble. It is open to students of all abilities and singing experience. We study a diverse range of choral repertoire and develop part singing and performance skills. The choir performs regularly at School events, concerts and Assemblies. 

 

Alphington String Players

Ensemble for Cello, Double Bass, Violin or Viola. Classical, Jazz, gypsy, folk or rock, we learn and rehearse for performances at School events.

Chamber Ensemble

Concert Band

For Woodwind or brass instruments this ensemble explores the music of big bands and popular music. Open to students of all musical abilities. 

 

Dance Club

Student run dance program open to dancers of all levels, no experience needed. Students explore different themes and styles of dance, including ballet, contemporary and jazz. 

 

Folk Band

Sing campfire songs, learn simple dance tunes or re-imagine songs for acoustic instruments. Learn by ear and tap into the mindfulness of playing simple tunes from memory.

 

Girls’ Band

An all-girls band for voice or instrumental. Students from Years 8 to 12, co-led by our current Music Captain.

 

Greek Band

Learn contemporary and traditional Greek music on any instrument. This band performs regularly at School and Greek community events.

 

Latin Band

This ensemble focuses on developing playing skills and technical proficiency in an environment that promotes inclusivity and fun. Learn the music of fiestas with your fellow students. 

 

Music Technology – Logic Pro

Learn how to produce music using the software Logic Pro. Students learn how to use sampling, effects and recording techniques in the pursuit of their own productions. 

 

Orchestra 

All musicians from Years 7 to 12 are welcome to join the Orchestra. 

 

Senior Band

Learn and perform popular songs and become more proficient on your instrument as you play in a band with your peers. Performances at School events. 

 

Year 7 Band

Open to all instruments and abilities, Year 7 students rehearse and perform and socialise through music. 

 

Years 8 and 9 Band

Build musicianship and learn new songs. Play pop, rock, hip-hop and other modern and contemporary styles.

STEM

Cosmic Club

A haven for space enthusiasts. Th club embarks on a journey through the vastness of the universe by taking images with digital telescopes and discussing the latest advancements in space exploration. 

 

Exploring Planet Earth with David Attenborough

Explore the wonders of the world through the lens of one of the greatest storytellers of our time. Each week a different documentary is viewed and afterwards explored deeper through thoughtful discussion analyzing the environmental themes, stunning cinematography and fascinating facts. 

 

Fighting Extinction Club

Students are actively involved in fighting extinction, biodiversity and promoting sustainability as part of a Zoos Victoria Fighting Extinction school. Students become passionate about nature and caring for the world around us staring on our bushland campus. 

 

Food Science

This program runs one experiment each week using the chemicals found in common foods. Activities have included: How acidic is Coke?; Coke and Mentos; the power of rhubarb; Elephant’s tusk; making cheese; making strawberry flavouring; how dangerous is vinegar?

 

Maths in Cooking

We explore mathematics involved in cooking through recipes examining components, costs and ratios. The club includes preparing ingredients; mixing; baking and clean up.

 

Microsoft Excel Workshop 

Students learn essential functions, time-saving shortcuts and real-world applications that will make academic life easier. For beginners and students looking to refine their skills. 

TI-coding (using DAS calculator)

Students are introduced to the basics of coding using CAS calculators to help build critical thinking and problem solving skills. Programming with TI-Innovator technology introduces physical computing and helps spark interest in engineering, robotics and more. Aimed to familarise students at Years 7 to 9 with the CAS calculator which is used in Years 10 to 12

Social

Book Club

Discuss good books and playing literary inspired games. A book is chosen each term to read and discuss.

 

Chess Club

Learn to play Chess. Develop strategy, patience and discipline. Students have the opportunity to enter inter-school competitions.  

 

Chess Club – Casual 

Bring your lunch – just show up, boards and chess sets provided to play with your friends.

 

Chess Coaching 

Coaching runs afterschool where students learn tactics and strategy with professional coaches. 

Chess tournaments are days to test your skills against students from other schools. 

 

Chinese Calligraphy

Step into the world of traditional Chinese calligraphy, mastering brush techniques and discovering the artistic and historical significance of this ancient writing form. 

 

Chinese Papercutting

A folk tradition symbolizing good fortune, prosperity and cultural heritage, our students unleash their creativity with this intricate Chinese art form. 

 

Community Service Club

Make a meaningful impact and develop leadership skills that contribute to local causes. Become part of something bigger by helping others and making lasting positive memories. 

 

East Asian Pop Culture Club

Explore the world of East Asian Pop Culture such as East Asian dramas, K-pop, Anime and Mandopop. 

 

Debating (Senior Years 9, 10 and 11)

Represent AGS in the Debating Association Victoria inter-school competition. Improve critical thinking and public speaking skills. 

 

Entrepreneurs Club

This club guides students through the process of ideas and then turning them into actual businesses where they sell products and make profits. 

 

Greek Games and Glory

Embark on a journey through time with Greek Games and Glory, a semester-long cultural enrichment program that brings the excitement of Greek board and card games to life. Dive into the world of Tavli (Greek backgammon) , master the fast-paced strategy of Xeri, and uncover the secrets of Ancient Greek war games that were once used to train warriors. The program culminates in a end of semester tournament.

 

National History Challenge

A research based competition for Australian students. Students experience becoming a historian researching world history, examining Australia’s past, investigating their community or exploring their own roots. 

 

Page to Stage (Junior Club)

Students explore how a text made it from the written word to the silver screen whilst having fun.

 

Public Speaking Club

Improve your public speaking skills, work with an expert on how to deliver the perfect presentation.

Sport

AGS Swim Squad

The Secondary Swim Squad is designed to prepare students for individual and team competitions during Terms 1 and 4. Open to students from Years 7 to 12 who can swim at least 50 meters confidently. The Program improves technique, builds fitness and enhances competition times.

 

Table Tennis Club

Students develop precision, agility and focus while building friendships in this fun and engaging club.

 

Soccer Program

Focusing on skill development and game tactics, this program is open to all abilities and promotes confidence and teamwork. 

 

Softball Club

Students enhance their skills have fun and enjoy teamwork. 

 

Athletics Enrichment

In collaboration with 4-time Olympic Distance Runner Craig Mottram, this program offers targeted training, wellbeing mentorship and preparation for athletics competitions. Additional competitions include the Victorian Millers Club track meet and the Athletics Victoria High Velocity club meet.

 

Basketball Club

Join the Basketball Club and elevate your game. Students can master fundamentals, or refine advanced skills, offering a supportive environment for players of all levels.
